Alberta Ballet is proud to welcome this iconic company to thrill audiences
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
CALGARY, AB – Alberta Ballet is thrilled to host the Dance Theatre of Harlem, a multi-ethnic ensemble that paves the way for an inclusive future in embracing the belief of its founder: “ballet belongs to everyone.”
The internationally regarded dance sensation brings a mixed program that will showcase talent and versatility against a backdrop of an eclectic score.
“The dancers and staff at DTH are excited to share our love for classical ballet with our friends in Alberta, Canada,” said Anna Glass, Executive Director, Dance Theatre of Harlem.
The programme opens with Nyman String Quartet No. 2. Take Me With You highlights the emotional depth and intensity of contemporary ballet in a pas de deux against the restless beat of Radiohead.
The enduring masterpiece from George Balanchine’s Pas de Dix will exalt the beauty, precision and grace of Balanchine’s choreography.
The programme culminates with Return, an ingenious fusion of classical ballet and the raw energy of street dance. Set to the iconic tunes of James Brown and Aretha Franklin, this work celebrates a “witty fusion of ballet techniques and street gait” (New York Times).
"For over 56 years, this extraordinary company has been redefining ballet and proving this art form belongs to everyone. We're thrilled to host them as part of our 2024/25 season,: says Alberta Ballet Artistic Director Francesco Ventriglia. Dance Theatre of Harlem’s audacious vision for ballet is sheer brilliance! It’s a programme that’s not to be missed!
Dance Theatre of Harlem performs in Calgary Feb. 13-15 and in Edmonton Feb. 21-22. For tickets, visit albertaballet.com.
