Alberta Ballet visits United Active Living

“I came to United Active Living to share my passion for ballet—and they surprised me with theirs. When they sang Somewhere Over the Rainbow, it was incredibly moving. I will never forget that moment.” —Francesco Ventriglia, Artistic Director, Alberta Ballet

In March, Alberta Ballet's Francesco Ventriglia visited the United Active Living senior residences in Fish Creek and Garrison Green. He spoke about the magic in creating The Wizard of Oz. In return, the residents of one community offered a heartfelt surprise: they sang Somewhere Over the Rainbow for him.

It was a powerful reminder of how the arts connect us—across generations, backgrounds, and life experiences.

Yvette, a resident of United’s Fish Creek community reflects on the experience, “I’ve always loved the ballet. It’s so interesting to learn what goes on behind the scenes and strengthens my interest in fine arts. Especially in organizations creating amazing work here in Calgary.”

This exchange of joy and creativity is at the heart of Alberta Ballet’s partnership with United Active Living, a Calgary company with five older adult communities across the city. United is at the forefront of redefining senior living, creating environments where older adults can thrive, pursue their passions, and live with purpose every day.

Arianne Brady, United vice-president of marketing and communications, notes that these experiences have also included attending Alberta Ballet performances at the Jubilee Auditorium:

"Partnering with iconic, world-class cultural institutions like Alberta Ballet allows us to offer our residents something truly unique—direct access to the power and beauty of live performance – both within our communities and on Alberta Ballet stages. We’re proud to support organizations that share our vision for a vibrant, engaged community.”

This kind of community connection is just one example of the some of the highlights that will be remembered from our 2024/25 season. And as we anticipate the delights of the coming season, we know we’ll continue sharing our art—and listening to the stories and passions of those who’ve spent a lifetime loving it.

"Having the chance to talk to the people who work so hard to produce shows is an exciting opportunity I didn’t think I’d have. It’s very meaningful, and it strengthens my interest in fine arts, especially those who are creating amazing work here in Calgary" – Yvette W.
